Free Film and TV Pitch Preparation Checklist
A practical checklist for preparing your logline, synopsis, characters, comps, and visual references before commissioning pitch materials.
1. Know who will read it
Write down the intended recipient, what they asked for, the file format, and the deadline. Verify submission rules with that recipient.
2. State the central story
Identify the protagonist, what they want, what stands in their way, and what they could lose. Try a concise logline before expanding into a synopsis.
3. Give the whole arc
Prepare a synopsis with the beginning, escalation, and ending. For a series, explain the pilot, season arc, and continuing source of conflict.
4. Introduce the essential characters
For each major character, include their role in the story, goal, conflict, and meaningful change. Avoid listing every person who appears.
5. Choose useful visual references
Gather references for location, atmosphere, characters, and tone. Explain what each reference communicates. Use only materials you can appropriately share and identify third-party reference imagery.
6. Explain your comps
Choose two or three relevant films or shows and describe the specific comparison: audience, tone, structure, or setting. Do not claim their results predict yours.
7. Check the package
Confirm names, spelling, ownership credits, readable text, page order, links, file size, and contact information. Make sure the materials match the actual service or submission scope.
8. Send a complete brief
